Laugh, they're watching!
Ariadne was born on a cold February night of 1929 into a world in which money was everything. Ever since she was a little girl, her parents excused their rare presence by drowning her complaints in a waterfall of lavish gifts. As their only child grew older, the numbers on the price tags of their little excuses increased faster than the height of Ariadne's Dior high heels. When she was only fifteen, she had avalanches of pearl necklaces, diamond rings and Chanel bags as far as the eye could see. She grew up knowing only how to be cosseted and pampered.
When Ariadne turned seventeen, the gifts suddenly stopped flowing in. Her parents' estate was mysteriously lost in the post-war haggling and so was her family's influential name and status. Not able to adjust to the life of the les misérables as she called them with a little twist of the head, she married the first rich man who happened to cross her way. Harry Watkinson was not a bad man, perhaps even a good one if one overlooked his passion for gambling. But he was not the man for Ariadne. After spending her days in front of the mirror lost its appeal to her, she began discovering her husband's private library. In no time, she has been transformed - her large dreamy eyes finally opened to the harsh reality of what la vie was all about. Not always en rose as she used to believe. Her life began to crumble in front of her eyes and before she even noticed her heart's revolt begin, Ariadne lost all interest in all her husband's villa along with all its servants and luxury and was condemned to see clearly for the first time in her life.
Set out to pack her bags and leave, Ariadne began to feel strangely ill. At first she blamed her nerves, but in the end her illness lasted for nine excruciating months at the end of which came something, which would bind Ariadne to her husband forever. A little miracle called Emma. And so, knowing she would stay and never leave, Ariadne began playing a game with the rest of the world... In the privacy of her garden, she would sit, contemplating philosophy and escape into her own world, in which she was not obliged to pretend and put on a smile to please others. But as soon as somebody turned to her- Laugh, Ariadne, they are watching...
